Troop 150 spent the majority of this month outside, and by doing so it just made August 2019 extremely fun. This month an outdoor Troop meeting took place, a pool party that celebrated the amazing summer we have had was held, and to top that off, Scouts fished in the beautiful weather out on the Chesapeake Bay along with performing many other exciting activities for their monthly campout.
On August 5th, the weekly Troop meeting took place at Mason District Park, instead of at AUMC. At Mason District a friendly yet competitive game of football was conducted. Everyone, including the adults, joined in for a vibrant time. Holding a meeting outside like this was very refreshing + enjoyable, and it could very well happen again in the near future.
Anyway, one week after that was the annual Troop Summer Pool Party. This event took the place of a regular Troop meeting, and it was a great success. This party was held at Broyhill Crest Pool (a great pool in the Annandale area).
Delicious food, including Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, and Cheeseburgers prepared by the adult leaders (thank you!) was quickly eaten by the many Scouts and family that attended.
A series of chess games, sharks and minnows, a small service project, and overall good memories occurred this night. Many could not have asked for an even better day. This was a great way to celebrate summer!
Later in the month, Troop 150 was doing yet another merrymaking event. This event was their monthly campout, which for this month was the Beach + Fishing Campout. The Troop planned to do a lot of fishing and stay near a beach. This is exactly what they did.
After leaving fairly early in the morning, Troop 150 arrived at their destination – a secluded campsite with it’s own “private” beach + fishing dock. It was very nice.
After setting up camp, Scouts chilled around the campsite for an hour or two. Some played cards, some hung out, and some fished.
That evening, the Troop headed out on a charter fishing boat and into to the Chesapeake Bay. There, they fished gracefully for around five hours.
As the day came to the close, our skilled SPL had the record count of 57 fish caught (one fish every 3 minutes) and our Troop Historian had the record for biggest fish caught (16.5 inches long). The Scout who caught the sixteen and one half inch long fish was later awarded with a prestigious golden-fishhook award. Congrats on the catch!
Once the Troop got back to camp, they went straight to work. They were soon busy preparing to win the cooking competition that was taking place. The Eagles patrol was smoking steak and shrimp while boiling some water for pesto pasta. A Buerre Blanc sauce was also in the making. The Sharks patrol was preparing a Shrimp Spaghet, the Dragons were cooking up some juicy hamburgers, and the Panthers patrol was cooking chicken, rice, and broccoli in order to create a spectacular dish. They were all ready to win!
Dinner was not the only thing that would be judged that night; Desserts would be as well. The Eagles presented a S’more brownie melt sponge cake while the Sharks presented a chocolate foundou. The Dragons had a double-layer brownie cake and the Panthers Patrol had brownie S’mores. All not bad dessert choices for a cooking competition.
That night, Patrols had created both dinner and dessert culinary masterpieces. When it came down to deciding the overall winner, it was very difficult. All patrols had significant dishes.
As we all know, there can unfortunately only be one winner. The Eagles patrol ended up being that prominent champion. Congratulations Eagles!
