In February 2019, Scouts practiced the twelfth point of the Scout Law along with going on their monthly campout. The campout was very wet, muddy, and yet enjoyable, as all Troop 150 events are. February is a special month right off the bat, but there was a Troop 150 occasion that made it even more special. That occasion was Scout Sunday, something that is held once per year.
Scout Sunday, held at AUMC so Scouts may express their gratitude to them for chartering the Troop, was a great success this year. Many Scouts and adults contributed by giving snacks to others after the Services, a mock campsite was set up, and a video highlighting some of the amazing adventures Troop 150 has had was displayed. Service #1 went very smoothly and everybody seemed to enjoy the Troop being there! After the Service, a small number of Scouts departed. Most of the Scouts had decided to stay for the second Service that would take place roughly an hour after Service number 1.
At Service #2, Scouts held a flag ceremony in addition to saying a prayer and answering questions about the Troop. Scouts did a great job speaking in front of everyone!
One week after Scout Sunday, Scouts gathered at AUMC to depart for their monthly campout, the Mariners’ Museum Campout, in Newport News. Adult leaders drove for more than three hours in the pounding rain to CNU, a “wonderful” college where Troop 150 ate lunch and toured the campus. An all-you-can-eat lunch was just what everybody needed!
After everybody had eaten their fill, Scouts headed to the Mariners’ Museum and looked at some interesting history and even some life-like and model boats. When everything there was seen, Scouts got a glimpse of the James River and then headed off to their campsite, which was a mud-pit. After some delicious meals in the rain and a rather long session of setting up tents, Scouts slowly fell asleep. That night there was a downpour.
Wet or not, Scouts woke up in the morning for some breakfast and a shot at earning the American Heritage MB at the Yorktown Museum. They received a tour of the museum and a military demonstration. It was very educational and fun!
