February was another fun month of Scouting where we had two more important events. There was Men’s Breakfast, where we ate and talked with the men who sponsor the Troop, and Scout Sunday, where we thanked the church that helps make this troop possible.
For Scout Sunday and Men’s Breakfast, some Scouts met up to record opening and closing flag ceremonies, remarks about the troop, and a reading. The following video is an excerpt from that day.
During Men’s Breakfast, we continued our annual tradition of honoring and thanking the AUMC Men’s Group for chartering us. We were not able to serve and cook for the Men’s Group this year but we did the next best thing – a virtual Men’s Breakfast! We followed breakfast burrito recipes so we could make and enjoy them at home, had a cooking lesson for a yogurt parfait, and had fun company for breakfast. After breakfast, we gave the 2021 State of the Troop report and showed a video of troop activities.
We had two fun meetings, one where we learned about the principles of tread lightly and went over 2nd class requirements including, “Explain the principles of Leave No Trace and tell how you practiced them on a campout or outing.” We then talked about what we would do in several medical scenarios, as shown in the first image below. We finished the meeting off with a fun Kahoot!
In the second meeting we learned about orienteering and had a quiz about map legends. We ended our meeting with an amusing competitive quiz that included questions such as “What color were the magic slippers from the original The Wizard of Oz,” (They are silver, not ruby! Many of us got that wrong).
This month we also had a virtual campfire, which was part of the new Scout virtual campout where we sang songs, performed skits, and watched a 2020 year in review video. One troop member even played their ukulele!
We also had 2 PLCs, one of them was about planning the upcoming virtual campout for the former Phoenix Scouts and any new Scouts. The 2nd PLC meeting was shorter because of President’s day and we discussed the meetings for March during it.
