Turtle Express: March 2019

Following a very exiting month of February, March 2019 set expectations even higher than before. Men’s Breakfast, Webelos Crossovers, and a new idea for a campout occurred.  Scouts were also given the opportunity to earn Merit Badges at a district-wide Merit Badge Jamboree.  In addition, OA elections took place during a meeting this month.

The first major event of this month was on 3/4/19 at a Troop meeting.  Five candidates to the OA were voted upon by their fellow Scouts to decide who would be best fit for Scouting’s national honor society.  The results of these votes were given a couple weeks later at Troop 150’s March Campout.

Three other major events occurred before the Pioneering Campout. Men’s Breakfast was the first of these three.  Men’s Breakfast is an event hosted by Troop 150 in an effort to express their gratitude towards the Men’s group. The Annandale United Methodist Men, or more commonly known as the “Men’s Group” have been the predominate chartering partner of Troop 150 to this day.

Scouts came as early as 6 o’ clock in the morning to prepare for this event.  Several Scouts came to help out the night before as well.  These actions helped lead to a prosperous and yummy event.

Only two days later, Troop 150 was meeting together for an event equally as important as Men’s Breakfast.  This event was an unusual Troop meeting, for Troop 150 was leading a Webelos crossover for Pack 150 .  After receiving three new Scouts early during this meeting, Troop 150 headed off to a campfire with S’mores in order to properly welcome the Scouts into the Troop.

Pack 1229 also has three Scouts of which had plans to join Troop 150.  After a formal ceremony was held for them by a couple of Troop 150 Scouts, the previous Pack 1229 Scouts crossed their bridge they had made into Troop 150.

Several other people joined Troop 150 that were not in any of these Packs and many of those Scouts went on Troop 150’s March campout.  For March 2019, Troop 150 had a “Pioneering/Fort Campout.”  The weather for this event was phenomenal, which was one of the factors to it being a great campout.

Early on the last Saturday in March, Troop 150 gathered and prepared for a trip to their campsite at Camp Highroads.  They stacked many bags and pieces of wood into the trailer before leaving.  Upon arriving at camp, Troop 150 stretched, enjoyed the nice weather for a bit and then began work on a pioneered structure (many of which were forts).  Some hours and a few flag football games later, the structures were judged.  After the judging, the rankings by patrol were given as follows.

  • 1st Place  Panthers & Dragons (Tied)
  • 2nd Place – Sharks
  • 3rd Place – Eagles & Phoenix (Tied)

A cooking competition was also held.  The Panthers patrol, cookers of a fine steak, fries, and apple cobbler were awarded first place once again.  Second place was awarded to the Dragons, who cooked a Beef Stew and a Pineapple Upside Down Cake. The Eagles receive a solid third place with dishes of dutch oven pulled pork, mashed potatoes, and cherry cobbler. The new Scout patrol (the Phoenixes) received fourth place with chicken + rice and apple dumpling cake.  Last but not least, the Sharks received fifth place.  They cooked corn beef hash with a side of carrots and an apple pie.   All desserts were cooked in a dutch oven.

All patrols tried hard and did a great job.  Extra points were given to the patrols that participated in a Video Game Drive led by the Troop for those in need.
