Turtle Express: March 2021

Written by Troop 150’s Historian, revised by Troop 150’s Webmaster

It’s been about a year since the pandemic started, but Troop 150 has managed to still have a great month. We even had our first in person activity in a while! During this month’s meetings, we learned about state parks, how to make podcasts, how to tie knots, and what to do in emergency situations.

This month, there were a total of three interesting troop meetings. In the first meeting, we learned about several state parks from the host of the “VA outdoor adventures” podcast. Some of the parks we didn’t even know existed!

For her podcast, the host speaks with guests and discusses state parks in Virginia and several of their favorite activities, trails, and gear. During this meeting, she shared several tips for what we could do to create a podcast, like recording in a closet because of how quiet it is inside.

In the second meeting, one of the Scouts held a demonstration on how to tie several different knots including the taut-line, sheet-bend, and bowline. Did you know the bowline is sometimes referred to as the “the King of knots” because of how important it is? Learning how to tie some of these knots is a requirement for the second class rank. After that, we went to virtual patrol corners to sign off knot requirements and have a fun speed knotting contest to see who could tie knots the fastest. Next, we watched a personal safety presentation which was also helpful for earning a rank requirement.

In March’s third meeting, we did a lot of first-aid related activities. We started by going over several scenarios and how we should respond to them. We then went into patrol corners to sign off of requirements related to the discussion. After that, we competed in a first-aid jeopardy that included questions on recognizing medical problems, what to do in those situations, and how to mitigate and prevent them.

This month, we had a very exciting event! For the first time in a long time, we met in-person so we could work on requirements. It was great to get outside and see fellow Scouts, and we plan on doing an event like this again.

We also had a PLC this month where we went over upcoming meeting ideas. We have multiple in-person events schedules for April! Our first in-person troop meeting in over three months will be on April 5. We’ll continue to follow COVID-19 guidelines and our meetings will be held outside.
