Turtle Express: October 2018

During October, Troop 150 had many exciting events occur.   Yet another Eagle Scout Project was performed and SPL elections were held.  This month’s campout was a Fall Camporee, and there was even a special meeting that happened this month.

The first major event this month was an Eagle Scout project.  Scouts that attended this event cleared a large, overgrown area, planted milkweed, and then covered the entire area with mulch.  It’s not as easy as it sounds.

Both days of the Eagle Scout project were very successful.  There was high attendance at this event. Many Scouts earned service hours.  As always, it is hoped that the leader of this project reaches the rank of Eagle soon.

The next major event that occurred was SPL elections; celebrating a start to a new term.  SPL elections occur right before each term starts.  Three people ran for this position.  When all Scouts had cast their votes, the results were announced. Two candidates ended up tying. This has almost never happened inside of Troop 150. After everyone voted for the second time, the new SPL was announced.  The newly elected SPL will lead the Troop for the next six months.

On the Friday after that meeting, Troop 150 went on their monthly campout. This campout was the ODD/Col./Pat. District Camporee at Gunston Hall.  This happened to be the 20th anniversary of the one time George Washington District.  This was a fun camporee with many activities.

The activities included an inflatable obstacle course, log smash, dodgeball, gaga ball, stick wrestling, and pancake flipping.  Troop 150 did these activities on Saturday, and everybody had an amazing time. That evening, Troop 150 participated in a campfire.

Later that night, Troop 150 was informed of the high winds that northern Virginia was about to receive.  While Troop 150 was preparing for the high winds, the winds began to hit in gusts of about 30mph!  Everybody worked fast but efficiently so they could go into their tents and get out of the wind.

Early the next morning, Troop 150 saw the damage the wind had done.  There were collapsed tents with snapped and bent poles and everything was a mess.  To top that off, it was freezing.  Troop 150 decided it was best to leave Gunston Hall early.  They packed everything into the trailer and then set off for AUMC.

The next meeting was a PLC, but the week after that was a Troop meeting. This was not just any ordinary meeting.  Lt. Tucker came to help Scouts earn First Class requirement 9a, and then helped the Troop earn the Fingerprinting merit badge. A fingerprinting merit badge counselor also helped Scouts earn this badge. Several Scouts of Troop 150 earned the Fingerprinting merit badge.

October was truly a memorable month for Scouts in Troop 150.
