Another month has gone as quickly as it came, and this month was full of even more adventure than before. Besides the monthly campout, some other things that were very important happened. It is not every day that a Scout in Troop 150 earns Eagle.
Please join Troop 150 in congratulating Gary on earning the highest rank in Scouting, the rank of Eagle. He earned this rank on September 4th, making him the first Eagle Scout in Troop 150 for the year of 2018.
Aside from that, Troop 150 also had a Court of Honor for the Fall season. Many Scouts in Troop 150 attended this event and earned lots of awards and badges. Merit badges that Scouts earn at Goshen were presented at this event, and several people went up in rank. For the first time in a long time, every Scout that attended Goshen (See Turtle Express: July 2018) earned the religious patch (Special thanks to our Troop Chaplain). Troop 150 also invested 3 new Scouts into the family of Scouting inside of Troop 150.
At the Court of Honor, Troop 150 was awarded the Gold Journey To Excellence Award yet again. We were also presented with the Goshen Camp Time Adventure Award and Troop of the week (for Goshen). Scouts that went to Sea Base also received awards at this Court of Honor. Along with three mile swimming awards, four Totin’ Chip certificates, and four Cyber Chip certificates, two National Outdoor Awards were also issued. Congratulations Scouts!
This campout was one of the more relaxing campouts. Troop 150 went to Baltimore, Maryland and did many things related to history there. Upon arrival in Baltimore, Troop 150 went to Fort McHenry’s museum and the fort itself. A lot of the Scouts found it interesting. Next, the Troop went up an old lighthouse on the inner harbor and got an amazing view of the river. Even more amazing? The Troop 150 went on a Coast Guard cutter after that!
The Coast Guard Cutter was called the Taney. The Taney is the only ship that survived the battle of Pearl Harbor. It was a very interesting experience for all Scouts. After visiting the Taney, Troop 150 had planned to go to Camden Yards, but unfortunately, it was canceled due to a doubleheader taking place that day. On the good side, Troop 150 got to do another fun thing instead. Troop 150 was able to go all the way to the top of Baltimore’s World Trade Center to have a spectacular view of the city!
After going on yet another piece of valuable history, Troop 150 headed towards the USS Constellation. Along with a scavenger hunt of throughout the ship, Troop 150 also ate some “Beef Stew,” prepared by the USS Constellation staff. When it was time for lights out, Troop 150 got into their hammocks and went to bed. Well, some…
I certainly can’t forget to mention night shift. Multiple groups of Scouts were assigned night shift, and they switched off per hour. If you were serving night shift you were expected to check the boat for fires and leaks while also making sure no one entered the ship. You were expected not to doze off.
Early the next morning, everybody arose from their hammocks for a breakfast of oatmeal and bacon. After that, Troop 150 was provided with instructions on how to fire a cannon, and then they got to watch a cannon get fired! If that’s not exciting, I don’t know what is. When the Troop’s time on the USS Constellation was over, we headed over to the USS Torsk, a submarine. After everybody completed their tour, the Troop concluded their time in Baltimore and began the drive home.
Overall, Scouting in September was quite a great treat! Troop 150’s next campout will be a camporee from Oct. 19 – 21, 2018.
