During September 2019, Boy Scout Troop 150 held their annual Fall Court of Honor [COH] and went caving in the upper and lower caves located deep inside of Laurel Caverns, located in Farmington, Pennsylvania.
The first event that occurred this month was an Eagle Scout Project. This Eagle Scout Project spanned over two days, and many things were accomplished. The first task of this project was to clear a small area of weeds and plants.
The next task was to construct and install two gates. After spending some time putting together the gates, Scouts began to dig. A couple unsuspected obstacles popped up along the way, but they were persevered through.
The next day, after the gates had been put in place, Scouts dug more holes. They had a goal of installing three (3) rocket boxes.
A lot of hard effort was put into making this Eagle Scout Project a success, and it is in hopes that the leader will become an Eagle Scout soon.
The next event was the Court of Honor. Troop 150 spent the majority of this month preparing for this occurrence; whether it was working on requirements/merit-badges, having BORs/Scoutmaster Conferences, or even just planning it. All the hard work put in certainly paid off!
September’s Fall Court of Honor was a great success. Many Scouts in Troop 150 attended this event and earned lots of awards and badges. Merit badges that Scouts earned at Goshen were presented at this event, and several people went up in rank. Troop 150 also invested a Scout into the longevity of Troop 150 (one transferring from another Troop).
At the Court of Honor, Troop 150 was awarded the Gold Journey To Excellence Award. We were also presented with the Goshen Camp Time Adventure Award. Scouts that went to Philmont also received some prestigious awards at this Court of Honor. Along with Totin’ Chip certificates, Cyber Chip patches, and some really good cake, a Scout Spirit coin was also issued. In addition, a slideshow highlighting Troop 150’s summer activities was presented.
Fairfax County Chairman Sharon Bulova also gave a short speech at this Court of Honor. Before the meeting, she talked with a group of Scouts to help them receive difficult to earn requirements. Thank you, Chairman Bulova!
Five days later, Troop 150 was heading off to caving. They would be getting dirty for nearly three hours in America’s deepest northeastern cave.
After a long drive, lunch, and a few rounds of cards, the Scouts burned off the calories they had so recently consumed.
Going through water, crawling through tunnels that you can’t stand up in, and climbing over rocks were just some of the things this magnificent caving experience covered. All Scouts enjoyed it to the fullest, and Troop 150 will most definitely go again in the future.
